1. Over-Replacement with Thyroid Medication#

If you take Levothyroxine (Synthroid) or desiccated thyroid extract for hypothyroidism, a low TSH is the classic sign that your current medication dose is too high. Your doctor will typically reduce your daily microgram dose to prevent heart strain.

Biotin (commonly taken for hair and nail health in doses of 5,000 to 10,000 mcg) does not actually affect your thyroid, but it chemically interferes with laboratory test machines, producing a false reading of low TSH and high Free T4. Stop biotin for 48 to 72 hours before a blood test.
