1. BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen): Kidney & Hydration Health#

BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) measures the amount of urea nitrogen in your bloodstream. Urea is a natural waste product created when your liver breaks down dietary proteins. Under healthy conditions, your kidneys filter urea out of your blood and excrete it in your urine.

  • The BUN / Creatinine Ratio: Doctors compare BUN against Creatinine. A ratio over 20:1 almost always points to simple dehydration rather than kidney damage.

2. Ferritin: Your True Cellular Iron Storage Tank#

Many people assume a "Serum Iron" test shows whether they have enough iron. In reality, serum iron only measures the iron floating in your blood at that moment.

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron inside your cells. Think of serum iron as the cash in your wallet, and ferritin as your bank account.

3. MCHC: Hemoglobin Concentration in Red Blood Cells#

MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration) is part of your Complete Blood Count (CBC). It measures the concentration of hemoglobin packed inside a given volume of red blood cells (how rich or "dense" the oxygen-carrying pigment is).

  • Standard Reference Range: 32.0 to 36.0 g/dL (or 320–360 g/L)
  • Low MCHC (Hypochromia, < 32.0 g/dL): Red blood cells appear pale under a microscope because they lack sufficient hemoglobin. The most frequent causes are iron deficiency anemia and long-standing blood loss.
  • High MCHC (Hyperchromia, > 36.0 g/dL): Highly concentrated cells, often caused by severe dehydration, cold agglutinin antibodies, or a rare red cell membrane condition called hereditary spherocytosis.

4. MPV: Mean Platelet Volume (Platelet Size & Clotting)#

MPV (Mean Platelet Volume) measures the average size of your platelets, the tiny cell fragments responsible for forming blood clots to stop bleeding.

  • Standard Reference Range: 7.5 to 11.5 fL (femtoliters)
  • What High MPV Means (> 11.5 fL): Larger platelets are young, newly produced cells recently released by your bone marrow. A high MPV means your body is actively replacing platelets, which can happen during acute recovery or as a marker of cardiovascular activation.
  • What Low MPV Means (< 7.5 fL): Platelets are smaller and older, which can occur if the bone marrow is under-producing cells (such as during vitamin B12 or folate deficiency).
