During erythropoiesis, erythroblasts divide until a critical cytoplasmic hemoglobin concentration is reached. Impaired DNA synthesis (B12/folate deficiency) delays division, yielding macrocytes; impaired heme synthesis (iron deficiency) causes extra divisions, yielding microcytes.
